Fear of cyber attack
Sunday, 6 September 2020
The central bank has reportedly issued a note of caution that there may be attemptsat hacking into the operational system of Bangladeshi banks. Accordingly, some banks have limited their online banking services and imposed some restrictions on electronic transactions.
This is not at all surprising, given the recent surge in online banking services during the coronavirus crisis. Bangladesh earlier saw the world's largest cyber heist of the Bangladesh Bank money of US$81 million in 2016. There were a few attacks on the banking transactions. So, the country should have been more careful and we hope the banks and financial institutions are ready to protect them from such attacks.
We are increasingly becoming dependent on the internet for almost all sorts of communications and day-to-day activities. Therefore, we have no alternative to strengthen our infrastructures and make our citizens more aware of risks on the cyber space.
