HABIGANJ, June 6 (UNB): The much-needed 'Gungiajuri Haor Project' is going to be implemented in the district as the government has given approval for the feasibility study of the project.
A meeting of the Water Resources Ministry sanctioned Tk 18.6 million (1.86 crore) for the 10-month feasibility study of the project on May 19 with its Secretary Sheikh M Wahid-uz-Zaman in chair.
On completion of the project, 25,000 acres of croplands in Bahubal, Nabiganj, Baniachang and Sadar Upazilas of the district would be brought under diversified crop cultivation programme.
Even if the farmers cultivated only local 'ufsi' variety of paddy, they could produce 0.12 million tonnes worth Tk 1.76 billion per year as the present government rate, experts said.
Besides crops, there is a bright prospect for pisciculture, dairy and poultry farming.
There has a great chance to build up an agro-based industry in the district where agricultural day-labourers remain unemployed most of the period of the year.
But on implementation of the project, 15,000 labourers will get job opportunity over the year.
The project cost might be from Tk 800 million to maximum Tk 1.00 billion, said an official source.
Earlier in 2000, the Planning Commission has sanctioned Tk 11.2 million to conduct the feasibility study of the 'Gungiajuri Haor Project'.
