A female union parishad (UP) member along with her elderly mother has been heinously tortured allegedly by her husband and his friends at Kalomegh village in Patharghata upazila in Barguna. The victims have filed a case with Patharghata Police Station under section 11 (Ga) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in this connection, said GM Shahnewaz, officer-in-charge of the police. Locals said Riaz Hawlader of the village hurled abuses at her wife, the victim UP member, in front of his mother-in-law at his house over the family feud on Sunday night. Later, Riaz, together with his two brothers and several friends, tied up the hands of his wife behind the back and started beating her up mercilessly. At one stage, the cruel husband took out scissors and cut off the hair of his wife and mother-in-law by turns. During a visit to the victims’ house, local journalists found them in a pathetic condition. In an emotion-choked voice, the UP member said, “It’s my (bad) luck. I hold arbitration for torture on women as a public representative. Who will hold trial of this inhuman torture inflicted on me?” Despite repeated attempts, Riaz could not be reached over mobile phone for his version over the incident, according to UNB.
