Ferry service at Meghna Bridge point planned

The government has taken a plan to start ferry service at the Meghna Bridge point within a month to stop plying of overloaded vehicles over the already threatened bridge on the Dhaka-Chittagong corridor.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader visited the ferry site Saturday and said an initiative has been taken to start the rehabilitation work of
the important bridge on the country's main economic corridor.
He said the government has already taken measures to control overloading on the bridge by setting an axle load station at Daudkandi point.
The minister also gave direction to complete the repair work of the axle control machine at Meghna point to totally prevent overloaded vehicles from using the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
The communications minister earlier visited various points on the country's main economic corridor from Jatrabari to Katchpur and gave direction to remove all kinds of obstructions along the road to ease severe traffic gridlock at the city's entry point.
Though the minister gave instruction to remove all construction materials, illegal establishments, timbers and drums dumped along the roadside, he however did not give any deadline in this connection.
"Stern action will be taken against those who will not follow the instruction," the minister said.
Obaidul Quader also gave direction to keep the corridor clean and take steps for its beautification.
During the visit local members of parliament (MPs) including Sanjida Khanum and Abdullah Al Kaiser, chief engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Abdul Quddus, transport expert Prof Shamsul Haque, Mirpur-Airport flyover project director Abu Sayeed, Highway Police Director General and Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj district were present.
