Ferry services resume

Monday, 1 December 2014

Movement of ferries on Shimulia-Kawrakandi and Daulatdia-Paturia river routes resumed on Monday morning after several hours’ of disruption caused by thick fog. Abdul Alim, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC)’s Shimulia Ghat (terminal), said they kept suspended ferry services and plying of launches and other water vessels from 3:00am to 10:30am due to blurred visibility for dense fog. Six ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Shimulia and Kewrakandi Ghats from 3:00am, while 6 ferries remained stranded in the middle of Padma River. Several hundred vehicles were kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing. However, ferry services resumed around 10:30am on the waterways as fog disappeared after the sunrise. Meanwhile, ferry services on Daulatdia-Paturia river route had been halted for about 4 hours on Monday morning due to dense fog. BIWTC’s Aricha Ghat manager Mahiuddin Rasel said movement of ferries as well as other water vessels came to a halt at 5:00am due to blurred visibility caused by thick fog. Two ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Daulatdia, three ferries at Paturia. Besides, 8 ferries had come to a stop in the middle of Padma River since 5:00am. Ferry services resumed around 9:00am as fog started disappearing after the sunrise, according to a news agency.
