Ferry services resume after 11 hrs

Movement of ferries in Mawa-Kewrakandi waterways resumed partially on Wednesday morning, 11 hours after the suspension of ferry services in the important route due to erosion by Padma River which threatened Mawa ferry terminals. AKM Ashiquzzaman Chowdhury, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said Ferry Ghat (terminal) No-3 at Mawa under Lauhajang Police Station of Munshiganj was washed way partially by strong currents of Padma River around 8:45pm on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to temporarily suspend ferry services. He informed that nine shops situated in Mawa ferry ghats were also gulped down by Padma River. Several hundred vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the river for 11 hours for the halt in ferry movement. Saiful Hasan Badal, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj district, said they made their all-out efforts to resume ferry services on the important route. General ferry services on the river route resumed from Kewrakandi Ghat after 8:00am today but Ro-Ro ferry services remained halted, BIWTC sources said, according to BSS.
