Ferry services resume after 9 hrs

MANIKGANJ, Dec 19 (UNB): Ferry services on the Paturia-Daultadia route resumed this (Wednesday) morning after nine hours' disruption due to dense fog.
Ashraf Ullah Khan, manager (commerce) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha ferry sector, told UNB that 14 ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers remained stranded at Daulatdia and Paturia ferry terminals and in the mid-river since 10:00pm on Tuesday due to poor visibility caused by fog.
Ro Ro ferries Keramat Ali, Shah Paran, Barkat and Kopoti stayed anchored in the midstream of the Padma River for the blurred visibility due to thick fog while 10 other Ro Ro ferries lay stuck in in both the ferry ghats with a huge number of vehicles.
About 600 vehicles, including buses, trucks and cars remained stranded on both ends of the waterway and in the mid-river for over nine hours, Ashrafullah said.
However, ferry services resumed at around 7.00 am on Wednesday on this important route as visibility improved with the sunrise.
Another report from Munshiganj says: Ferry services on the Mawa-Kawrakandi route resumed on Wednesday morning after nine hours' suspension due to dense fog.
Shekor Chandra, assistant manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTA), said they were compelled to had to keep the ferry services halted till 7:45am on Wednesday from 10:30pm on Tuesday because of poor visibility caused by fog.
The ferries loaded with vehicles started operating from both sides after fog disappeared, he added.
Six ferries had laid anchored in the mid-Padma river for poor visibility due to fog, causing untold suffering to the people.
Around 400 vehicles got stuck at both Mawa and Kawrakandi terminals due to the suspension of ferry services.
Most of the time, passengers traveling in 21 southern districts on the route face untold suffering due to dense fog in the winter season.
