Fertiliser heist: JS body for realising compensation from BADC staff

A parliamentary subcommittee has suggested realising compensation from officials and employees of the Bhairab BADC warehouse for the fertiliser deficit. The subcommittee on Thursday made the suggestion placing its report at the 10th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture Ministry, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Mokbul Hossain in the chair, said a Parliament Secretariat press release. In December last, the parliamentary body constituted the three-member subcommittee to probe the incident of missing of some 3,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser from the warehouse of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj district. In the report, the subcommittee also recommended strengthening monitoring by the district and upazila-level fertiliser monitoring committees. It suggested transferring BADC officials and employees related to fertilisers in case of fulfilling their three-year period in an office. At the meeting, the damage of crops by the recent flood also came up for discussion.
The recent flood caused by heavy downpour damaged paddy and other crops on 39,102 hectares of land in 34 districts across the country, according to estimate of the Department of Agricultural Extension. Committee members Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Dr Abdur Razzak, Abdul Mannan, AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen, Nurul Islam Omar and Umme Kulsum Smrity attended the meeting, according to UNB.
