The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Monday officially sought cancellation of freedom fighter (FF) certificates of five senior government officials who arranged the recognition for themselves prior to retirement, intending to avail various benefits earmarked for those who fought to liberate Bangladesh.
The ACC sent a letter, signed by its secretary, to the Public Administration Ministry recommending to revoke the certificates of the five officials, as well as departmental action against them for their misconduct, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.
The anti-graft body also recommended cancellation of the gazette notification of their FF certificates.
The offending officials were identified as Trust Secretary Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan, Liberation War Affairs Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, joint secretary Abul Quasem Talukdar, Science and Technology secretary AKM Amir Hossain, former secretary to PMO Molla Waheeduzzaman, now chairman of Privatization Commission.
Out of six government officials who were under ACC scanner, a probe found that Housing and Public Works secretary Dr Khondakar Showkat Hossain was a genuine freedom fighter.
ACC deputy director Zulfiker Ali recently submitted the probe report to the Commission, that looked into allegations of government officials taking FF certificates abusing their power.
