FFs vote for new leaders

Sunday, 27 June 2010

Voting ended peacefully across the country Saturday to elect new bodies of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, a platform of the Freedom Fighters (FFs) of Liberation War, reports BSS.
The FFs exercised their franchise at 481 centres across the country to elect the 41-member central command council, 17-member district command councils and 11-member upazila command councils.
The voting started at 8am and continued until 4pm. No untoward incident during the balloting was reported from anywhere, said an official at the control room at the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
He said the counting of the ballots is now going on in all the upazilas. The results of the upazilas would be compiled in the districts and then sent to the control room, he added.
It was the first time after independence that the grassroots-level FFs voted directly for electing their representatives. The number of voters in the polls was 1,62,355.
The last central committee of the Sangsad was constituted in 2001 with Muktijoddha Sangsad councillors as voters.
Three full panels -- Ahad-Mohiuddin panel, Gama-Salauddin panel and Helal-Matin panel -- are contesting in the election.
Some independent candidates are also contesting for different posts.
In the central command council, 216 candidates are contesting for 41 posts. Of them, 10 are racing for the post of chairman, 37 for six vice-chairmen posts and 15 candidates for the posts of three secretaries general.
A five-member Election Commission headed by Cabinet Secretary M Abdul Aziz conducted the election.
Other members are Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Shafiq Alam Mehdi, former secretary Hiralal Bala, Brigadier General (retd) Jalal Uddin Siddiqui and Major (retd) Abdus Salam.
In Dhaka, vote centres were at Motijheel Ideal High School, Shukrabad Model School and College, and Muslim High School.
Deputy commissioners (DCs) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) respectively conducted the election at the district and upazila levels.
Ten candidates contesting for the post of the chairman are Principal Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, Ismat Kadir Gama, Brigadier General (retd) Helal Morshed Khan, Noyeem Jahangir, Abir Ahad, Nurul Huda, Osman Ali Khandakar, M Alamgir, Farid Uddin Jakir Khan and Khalequzzaman.
