Fight for voting rights like fight against quota

Amir Khasru urges students

FE REPORT | Saturday, 13 July 2024

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called upon the students to engage themselves in the movement for restoring democracy and getting back voting rights of people - apart from their ongoing agitation for quota reforms in the government services.
BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made the appeal from a discussion, organised by Gonotontro Mancha at the National Press Club in the capital on Friday.
"The way the government is running the country will not help the meritorious persons to move forward. I don't believe that the government wants to see the country as a merit-based Bangladesh. Meritorious people are always in favour of truth. They are on the path of truth, and they know how to resist."
About inundation of the capital's roads due to heavy rains on Friday, he said, "The roads of Dhaka city will naturally get inundated during downpour, because there are no meritorious people (in the departments)."
"The people of the country have lost their ownership (of the country). To get back their ownership, there is a need for building national unity among the political parties."
Mr Amir Kashru further said the issues of giving back the country's ownership to the people and bringing about necessary changes in the judiciary, economic and social systems are being included in the BNP's 31-point charter of demands.
"Without national unity a new political order and reform of the state might not be possible."
He stated that this unity and consensus among the political parties would not only help to oust the present fascist government of Awami League, but it would also help people to realise their dreams.
"If we (the opponents) all give guarantee to implement the 31-point charter of demands and reach out to the people, it will be possible to make the ongoing anti-government movement successful. For realising this, we have to announce programmes," he added.
Chief Coordinator of Gonosonghoti Andolon Zunaid Saki presided over the event. President of Nagorik Oikkya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, General Secretary of Biplobi Workers Party Saiful Haque, and Coordinator of Rashtra Sangskar Andolon (state reform movement) Hasnat Oayum also attended it.
