Fighting climate change -

Fighting climate change | Monday, 22 March 2021

Bangladesh is one of the countries in the world, which is directly affected by global warming and climate change. It is affecting ecosystem functioning, agriculture and food security, infrastructure, water resources and human health. The climate victims are paying extra amount from their limited resources to face the challenge or migrating to city for livelihood. From rising sea levels to increasing temperatures, Bangladesh has to undergo a number of crises in the form of natural disasters every year. Climate change is a reality in our country, yet it is one of the most neglected issues.
Our economy mainly relies on agriculture for employment and for feeding a huge population. Sixty-five per cent of our population lives in rural areas. Agriculture is especially vulnerable to climate change. We are experiencing recurring climate-induced disasters. The fund for climate change and disaster allocated from the national exchequer is lower than the country needs. In this case, the authorities concerned should take necessary steps to introduce different sustainable eco-friendly products like Sonali Bag, a biodegradable jute bag invented by scientist Mubarak Ahmed Khan, in the market. They should also financially help entrepreneurs and businessmen who are bringing such products.
