Filaria hospital in Syedpur in acute financial crisis

NILPHAMARI, July 10: Filaria still exists as an alarming disease for thousands of people in this region. The disease borne by a particular type of mosquito is a curse particularly for the hardcore poor people who cannot afford to use mosquito nets.
Asma Khatun (20), a student of HSC was married and now divorced by her husband because she contacted filaria. She took treatment in Syedpur filaria hospital and was cured. Now she is staying with her parents at Boda Upazila of Panchagarh district.
Rani Begum of Kishorganj Upazila in Nilphamari, a student of class VII, had to discontinue her studies as she contacted Filaria disease.  She is now taking treatment in Syedpur Filaria hospital.
But the hospital is now in a bad shape financially.
Established in Syedpur by the Institute of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Bangladesh (IACIB) with the help of the Embassy of Japan it is now the only Filaria hospital in the world.
The hospital now is suffering from acute financial crisis, the supervisors nurses, lab technicians and other staff are not paid their salaries regularly.
