Final decision on delimitation of JS seats in July

Monday, 30 June 2008

The Election Commission (EC) will finalise its decision on re-demarcation of parliamentary constituencies by the first week of next month, reports UNB.

Election Commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain Sunday said that they would not take more than seven days after ending the ongoing hearing on objections to the commission-designed delimitation plan.

The commission would wrap up the country-wide hearing on objections in Rajshahi Monday involving 13 parliamentary constituencies drawn from the northern region.

"The delimitation will be finalised by the first week of July taking the people's objections into account," Sakhawat told journalists at his office.

Narrating his experiences of the country-wide tour tied to delimitation, he said that most of the petitioners belong to various political parties.

"Many of the petitioners are former lawmakers or political activists, and their objections were mostly personal," said the EC commissioner, also a retired Brigadier General.

He said that there were confusions among people about the re-demarcation since many think their localities may fall beyond their existing administrative units because of the implementation of the new plan.

Actually, Sakhawat said, existing administrative set-ups would remain same even if boundaries of the parliamentary seats are redrawn.

The commissioner, however, said he observed that people are optimistic about the national election, which is expected to be held by the third week of December.

About the reforms to the electoral laws, Sakhawat said people have already been aware of some major changes thanks to role of media. He said it came to him as a positive sign for holding an election free of muscle power and black money.

Replying to a query on the Awami League's latest position to endorse the local body polls slated for August 4, he said: "it's very positive."
