FE Report
Finance Minister AMA Muhith Sunday expressed surprise over unabated corrupt practices faced by the women entrepreneurs in different public departments.
"I'm quite surprised to learn that the women entrepreneurs are victims of corruption equally," Mr Muhith said.
He said this while addressing a seminar entitled 'anti-corruption reforms for women entrepreneurs' organised by Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) held at a city hotel.
Mr Muhith said the income tax office seems to be the hub of corruption which was learnt from the findings of the survey conducted by the BWCCI.
According to the BWCCI findings, women entrepreneurs face corruption while they approach for trade licences, tax payers' identification number (TIN), credit and utility services.
Mr Muhith said: "Income tax office is highly corrupt and they take bribes while issuing TIN,".
The Finance Minister said: "Corruption prevails in various sectors. It's a shame for the nation; it's a hindrance to the welfare of the country."
Mr Muhith said merely government measures against corruption cannot bring a result. "Build a spirit to resist corruption and we will then be able to root out this (corruption)," he added.
Mr Muhith said introduction of automated system might stop the practices.
Mr Muhith also said the government is yet to take any decision regarding the special interest rate for the women entrepreneurs.
The BWCCI study also found that 60 per cent women entrepreneurs had to pay bribes for trade licences. 37 per cent entrepreneurs have experienced corruption while applying for trade licenses.
