Wednesday, 19 December 2007

Finland having world's best expertise in meteorological forecasts would like to cooperate with Bangladesh in enhancing the country's capacity to handle natural disasters, reports UNB.
The cooperation was extended Tuesday by Ambassador Asko Numminen of Finland, concurrently accredited to Bangladesh from India, during a meeting with Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury.
Chowdhury appreciated the idea and said Bangladesh would be happy to work together with Finland in this connection.
The Finnish envoy praised the government for the handling of cyclone 'Sidr' and its consequences. He showed keen interest in Bangladesh's development programme including the proposed mega projects for the southern part of the country to withstand natural calamities.
He lauded Bangladeshi role in the international forums, particularly in UN peace-keeping and peace-building missions.
The envoy also said Bangladesh and Finland had many shared values and complemented the government on adopting the law setting up a national human rights commission.
Chowdhury said: "Bangladesh values its relationship with Finland, as it does with other Scandinavian countries. We want to build these connections into an effective partnership for global peace and development."
