Fire burns about 400 shanties in Mirpur

Thursday, 23 October 2008

A devastating fire gutted some 400 shanties of a slum near the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in the city's Mirpur area Wednesday afternoon. The fire that originated from one of the shanties at about 4:55pm soon engulfed the adjacent dwellings and also damaged a nearby 6-storey building. After a frantic effort for over one hour, nine units of firefighters from Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Kurmitola and Fire Brigade headquarters doused the flame at about 6:15pm. No causality was reported. The extent of damage could not be ascertained. — UNB
