FE Report
Locals allegedly set fire to at least six abandoned buses at Matuail in the capital Friday morning as owners did not shift those vehicles despite their repeated requests. But firefighters rejected the claim, saying that the fire originated from a burning cigarette at about 10:20am and soon engulfed the buses. A senior fireman said six out of 15 abandoned buses were burned at Rayerbagh in Matuail area beside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Jatrabari. "Property worth Tk 1.20 million was damaged in the fire," he said, adding that no one was injured in the incident. Witnesses said infuriated local people set fire to the buses in the morning as their repeated efforts went in vain due to non-cooperation from the owners who kept the abandoned vehicles there for some years, causing sufferings to local people's movement. Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station AKM Abul Kashem said the buses were dumped there by their owners several years ago. "We heard the allegation of torching the buses. We're investigating the matter and will take legal action against the culprits if the allegation was found true." Earlier in January, eight other buses were also burned at the same place.
