Important valuables including nine computers, two air conditioners and a land phone of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Department of Dhaka University (DU) were gutted in a fire Thursday morning.
"The extent of loss in the fire may exceed Tk 1.2 million", department chairman Jesmin told reporters.
Department peon Billal Mollah said that he had sensed bad smell when he went near the department room on the second floor at around 7:30 am. He later informed the teachers and the chairman of the department of the matter.
On information, fire fighters came to the spot and doused the fire at about 8:15 am.
The department teachers guessed the fire might have originated from the UPS of a computer.
Two investigation committees, one with the teachers of the department and another with the university authorities, were formed to find out the actual cause of the fire. The committees will submit their reports within next one week.
