Fire in Mirpur slum

Saturday, 28 June 2014

Over 400 shanties were gutted in a fire that swept through a slum in city’s Mirpur Saturday, police said.
The flame was put out around 12:45pm, an hour after it had broken out at the slum, locally known as ‘Jhut Patti Bosti’ in Mirpur-11, police said.
Pallabi police OC Ziauzzaman said 400 to 450 makeshift homes had been destroyed but no casualty was reported, according to a news agency.
However, Dhaka police’s Pallabi zone Assistant Commissioner Kamal Hossain said several people had been injured while trying to douse the flames.
One of them had been given first aid at the police hospital.
The area has several RMG factories and garment scrap businesses.
Several such shops dealing in scrap have also been damaged, police said.
The cause of the fire and extent of damage are not yet known.
