Fire service and civil defence being modernised : Sahara

Home Minister Sahara Khatun said fire service and civil defence is being modernised gradually.
She said, "As a result, fire fighters will be able to face earthquake, fire incident and disaster in future⦠nearly 62,000 firemen are being prepared through higher training in phases", reports UNB.
She was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Week-2010 in the city Monday.
State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku and Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder also addressed the function.
The home minister said the government has changed the uniform of firemen following a long demand and hoped that now they will perform their duties with more courage and enthusiasm.
She said that after long 20 years, eight personnel of fire service and civil defence were given awards in four categories this year for their outstanding contributions.
Sahara said at present, there are 218 fire stations in the country. Construction of another 151 fire stations is going on under three projects. On completion of the projects, the number of fire service stations in the country will be 369.
Later, the home minister handed over awards to two recipients in each of the four categories - President Fire Service Medal, President Civil Defence Medal, Bangladesh Fire Service Medal and Bangladesh Civil Defence Medal.
