First formalin test centre opened at BCSIR

The first formalin test centre was opened at Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) in the city Sunday as part of the government's anti-adulteration movement, reports BSS.
Ministry of Science and ICT Secretary ASS Ahiduzzaman inaugurated the centre as the chief guest while BCSIR Chairman Professor Chowdhury Mahmud Hossain presided over the function.
The centre will help detect presence of formalin, a hazardous chemical for human health, particularly in fish and milk.
The BCSIR and officials of group B of the fifth batch MATT-2 project have jointly set up of the formalin test centre and created scope for selling formalin kits.
Speaking on the occasion, Ahiduzzaman said the BCSIR has been providing guidelines to the people about various aspects of the application of modern science in daily life.
Mahmud Hossain said the BCSIR is not only carrying out research activities but also committed to reaching the technology, developed by them to the doorsteps of the countrymen.
Formalin kit inventor Majeda Begum said the risk of cancer is higher in case of food intake mixed with formalin. Besides, it has other risks like causing damage to kidney, liver and lungs.
Joint Secretaries of the ministry of Science and ICT Ahmadur Rahim and Dr M Akram Hossain, Secretary of the BCSIR Jashim Uddin Mahmud, scientists, engineers and the government high officials were also present, among others at the function.
