First phase UP polls held as CEC claims turnout 30-40pc

Barring some isolated incidents, the first phase of the sixth Upazila Parishad elections ended on Wednesday with no major irregularities or incidents of violence, report agencies.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said the voter turnout in the first phase of 6th Upazila Parishad polls was between 30 and 40 per cent.
Polls opened at 8am and closed at 4pm.
Electronic voting machines or EVMs were used for voting in 22 Upazilas, while others used traditional paper ballots.
CEC Awal said "However, the real number will be known later. Due to rain and crop harvest, voters were reluctant to go to the polling centres.
