Fish farming in paddy fields gaining popularity in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Oct 25 (BSS): Fish farming in paddy field is increasing and gaining popularity among the people of the district.
District Fisheries Office sources said there are two ways of fish farming in paddy field as fish culture along with paddy and fish culture before cultivation and after cultivation of paddy.
A number of people in all the six upazilas of the district have been farming Rui, katal, Mrigel, Kalibaous, Pangas, Telapia, Shorputi and Silver Carp in the low laying areas of 1,124 hectares of paddy field in the districts.
Besides, the farmers are also cultivating vegetables on the adjoining fragmentation of land during the last five years due to its economic gains.
District Fisheries officer Abul Farah while talking to BSS correspondent at his office recently said fish farming in faddy field has added a new chapter in fisheries sector and it is gaining popularity in the district.
He said fish farming in paddy field also creates employment of rural people and fulfill the demand of nutrition.
He said farmers of the district are now annually producing about 2,800 to 3,000 tons of fish in the paddy fields and it fulfills the local fish demand in the district. Moreover, farmers are also cultivating paddy in the same land.
The officer said Fisheries Department is providing different support to the farmers to make the programme successful.
He also said if the farmers get loan on easy term and fare price of fish in the market they will be interested more nd more to cultivate fish in the paddy fields.
BSS correspondent recently visited different upazilas of the district and found farmers are busy in farming fish in their low-laying Aman paddy fields.
