THAKURGAON, Oct 25 (UNB): Fish farming on paddy fields is gaining popularity among the small and marginal farmers of the district during the Bengali months of Ashwin and Kartik.
Small and marginal farmers face economic hardship as they do not have any work during the two months.
Some of them sell their paddy or labour in advance during the dull season.
To get rid of poverty, the farmers have started cultivating fish on their paddy fields to maintain their livelihood.
According to RDRS Bangladesh, a local NGO, some 311 farmers are cultivating fish on 90 acres of paddy field at present. They have already received four maunds of fish per acre of land.
Local agronomists said fish farming on the paddy field would not hamper the production of paddy.
RDRS in cooperation with Samajik Kalyan Sangstha (SKS) held a field day at Hat Dangipara village in Sadar Upazila Tuesday to popularise fish cultivation.
