CHITTAGONG, Nov 13: Fish import from Myanmar has resumed through Teknaf landport after the suspension for around a month.
Sources said, clearing of 100 tonnes of fishes, the first consignment of the local importers since the stoppage, began Sunday last.
VAT Commissionerate of Customs unilaterally had raised the tax rates on the fish imported from Myanmar in October.
In view of such a discriminatory decision, fish importers approached the concerned authority with an appeal to re-consider the issue and held meetings on several occasions for an amicable settlement.
But as the importers could not settle the issue, they decided to suspend import of fish from Myanmar since October 8.
Suspension of fish import has had an adverse impact on government revenue as fish is considered to be the main head of earning revenue at Teknaf landport, sources claimed.
