Fish, meat, eggs to be sold at fair prices during Ramadan

Says livestock minister

FE REPORT | Thursday, 18 January 2024

The government will sell fish, meat and eggs at subsidised rates for mass people across the country during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md Abdur Rahman disclosed this while talking to the media at his Bangladesh Secretariat office in the capital on Wednesday.
"Government is concerned about soaring prices of essential commodities. We are examining why the prices of commodities are high despite stable condition of their production and supply (commodities) to the markets," the minister said.
"We will also take measures after identifying the reasons for the high prices of fish, meat and eggs," he added.
He said that the government would supply those products to the low-income people through providing subsidy during the month of fasting.
Asked about the timeline for selling the products, the minister said that they (government) would start it (selling) just a few days before the start of Ramadan.
He said that the sale programme would be primarily run in the areas where mostly poor and marginalised people live.
He warned that the government would take punitive action against those who are involved in price manipulation of essential commodities including eggs.
Mr Rahman also stressed the need for creating mass awareness against the market syndicate.
He said Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in producing cows and goats that helped reduce cattle smuggling and untoward incidents on Bangladesh -India frontiers significantly.
