Fish output 'in floodplains can be increased' by 10 times

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas Wednesday said fish production could be increased by 10 times if 2.8 million hectares of floodplains of the country are

He said this at the closing ceremony of National Fisheries Week-2009 at Osmani Auditorium in the city. The theme of the week was 'pisciculture in floodplains is a way of changing the days.'
State Minister for Land Mustafizur Rahman was present on the occasion with Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Shah Alam in the chair, an official release said.
Abdul Latif said at present, fish production in floodplains is 200-220 kg per hectare, that can be increased to two tonnes if fish is cultivated for five to six months through some infrastructures.
