Fish prices up, rice down

Prices of different varieties of rice have registered a downward trend in the city markers with the arrival of seasonal Boro crop while those of some selective vegetables and spices went up during the last week, market sources said.
An expected harvest of a bumper crop in the current Boro season has helped push the rice prices down in the market, they mentioned.
The preliminary assessment of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), reveals the country's Boro output is expected to reach the 19-million target this season.
With the arrival of the new seasonal rice, prices of both coarse and finer varieties declined by Tk 2.0 to Tk 3.0 per kg in recent days, traders said.
Prices of 'minicate' variety of finer rice were ranging between Tk 36 and Tk 40 per kg at the retail levels Friday against the previous prices of Tk 40 and Tk 43 per kg.
The prices of different verities of coarse rice also came down by around Tk 2.0 per kg over the past week.
On the other hand, prices of some selected vegetables like tomato and carrot continued to rise in the market mainly due to their out of season supply shortage, traders said.
Tomato was selling between Tk 30 and Tk 36 per kg in the retail market against Tk 24 and Tk 28 per kg in the last week while the prices of carrot also jumped to Tk 36 per kg from its previous prices of Tk 28-Tk 30.
The price of brinjal maintained its previous rates of Tk 36 and Tk 40 per kg on Friday while prices of other vegetables remained more or less steady last week.
Prices of most of the spices except for onion marked a further rise in the city market last week.
Prices of local ginger rose to Tk 100 to Tk 150 per kg from Tk 90-140 while that of imported variety also jumped to Tk 130-Tk 140 per kg from Tk 120-Tk130, trading sources said.
Prices of different kinds of fish and chicken, which marked a sharp upward trend a few weeks back primarily because of inadequate supplies, remained unchanged during the last week.
A medium size of local 'ruhi' fish was selling between Tk 250 and Tk 350 per kg Friday while that of 'katla' fish between Tk 200 and Tk 300 per kg compared to their previous prices of Tk 200-Tk 250 and Tk 180-250 per kg respectively.
A medium size of local chicken was selling between Tk 180 and Tk 250 while the prices of beef and mutton were Tk 240-250 per kg and 350-Tk 360 per kg respective at the retail levels.
According to trading sources, prices of other essential commodities, including edible oil, atta, pulses remained almost static in the city markers during the last week.
