Fish, vegetables dearer, rice steady

Prices of fish and vegetables increased in the city's kitchen markets, although those of rice, spices and sugar remained stable, traders said Friday. Rice prices started cooling off in the city's kitchen markets and remained steady last week as fresh varieties hit the market, according to rice traders. Minicate was selling at Tk 44-48 per kg and Nazirshail was selling at Tk 45-52 per kg last week. Prices of medium and coarse rice also witnessed the same trend. Paizam was selling at Tk 36-40 per kg, Guti at Tk 35-37 per kg, BR 28 at Tk 40-42 per kg and IRRI at Tk 30 to Tk 34 per kg. Sugar traders said temporary halt of few refiners due to machinery repair and selling of the product to beverage companies at a high rate pushed the sugar prices up but now both unpacked and packed sugar remained stable at Tk 60 and Tk 65 per kg in the city's kitchen markets. Prices of other spices except onion maintained its previous trend in the city's kitchen markets. The imported garlic was selling at Tk 150 per kg and the local variety ranged from Tk 85 to Tk 90 per kg last week. Ginger ranged between Tk 80 and Tk 90 per kg last week. The imported variety of onion was selling at Tk 20-22 per kg down by Tk 2-3 per kg while the local one was selling between Tk 24 and 28 per kg last week. Edible oil also maintained its high trend in the city's kitchen markets. Loose soybean was selling at Tk 114-115 per kg, palm oil at Tk 98 to Tk 104 and super palm at Tk 105 per kg. One-litre container was selling at Tk 116, while two-litre container was Tk 228 last week. A can containing five litres of brand soybean oil such as Rupchanda, Teer and Pusti was selling between Tk 570 and Tk 580. Unpacked flour (Atta) was selling at Tk 28 per kg and the packed variety at Tk 33 to Tk 34 per kg. Unpacked refined flour (Maida) was selling at Tk 34 to Tk 35 per kg and packed Maida at Tk 38 to Tk 39 per kg last week. The price of four pieces of farm eggs was Tk 24 to Tk 26. Local lentil was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 105 per kg depending on its quality. Prices of vegetables witnessed a fresh hike by Tk 2-10 per kg last week, traders claimed transportation cost constributed to the price hike. 'Brinjal' was selling at Tk 20-30, 'patal' at Tk 25-40, tomato at Tk 30, green chili at Tk 30, potato at Tk 11-12, papaya at Tk 20, bitter gourd at Tk 25-30, sweet pumpkin at Tk 20, ladies finger at Tk 25-30, spoge gourd at 25-30 per kg last week. Fish prices except hilsha were also up in the city. A pair of medium sized hilsha was selling at Tk 1000-1200 while shrimp was selling at Tk 300- 500 per kg up from Tk 250-450 per kg according to size. Other fishes were up by Tk 10- 50 per kg. Ruhi was selling at Tk 220-240, pangas at Tk 100, Telapia at Tk 130-140, chital at Tk 360-370, cultured koi at Tk 200-220 per kg last week.
