Fish, vegetables prices up in city market

Prices of fish and vegetables saw an upward trend, which sources blamed on short supply in the city's kitchen market last week.
A pair of small Hilsha fishes were selling at Tk 500-Tk 600 while shrimp was priced at Tk 500 per kg, up from Tk 450 a week ago.
A medium-size 'ruhi' fish was selling at Tk 220-Tk 300 per kg and 'katla' Tk 250-Tk 280 compared to the previous Tk 200-Tk 250 and Tk 180-250 respectively.
Small fish, locally called 'kachki', was selling at Tk 280 per kg against the previous price of Tk 220, while 'Telapia' was priced at Tk 130 to Tk 120, 'Puti' Tk 250-Tk 300 and 'Tengra' Tk 300 a kg on an average.
Pangas was selling at Tk 100- Tk 120 per kg, up from the previous price of Tk 80- Tk 100.
On the other hand, prices of some vegetables like tomato and carrot rose mainly due to the off-season supply shortage, traders said.
Tomato and carrot rose by Tk 2- Tk 4 to stand at Tk 32 and Tk 40 per kg respectively.
Brinjal and green chili continued to hover at the high level of Tk 32 and Tk 50 a respectively.
Prices of other vegetables remained more or less steady last week.
The spice market of the city, however, was stable last week as prices of most of the spices remained steady.
Local ginger was selling at Tk 100 to Tk 140 per kg and the imported variety Tk 130-Tk 140 per kg, trading sources said.
The rice price maintained the same trend in the local market. The fine varieties of rice, Minicate and Nazirshail, were selling at Tk 36 and Tk 42 per kg at the retail level.
Course rice including 'IRRI', 'Swarna' and 'Paizam' ranged between Tk 30 and Tk 36 per kg.
On the other hand, the price of edible oil in five-litre container decreased by Tk 5 to Tk 10 at the retail level.
The Rupchanda brand edible oil in five-litre container was selling at Tk 400, Pushti Tk 410 and Teer Tk 420 last week.
The prices of non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm and soybean ranged between Tk 80 and Tk 90 per litre.
The price of every four red farm eggs was Tk 25, white eggs Tk 23 and local eggs Tk 30.
A medium-size local chicken was selling at Tk 180 to Tk 250 while the prices of beef and mutton were Tk 240-250 and 350-Tk 360 per kg respectively at the retail level.
According to trading sources, prices of other essential commodities, including potato, atta and pulse remained almost static in the city market.
