Fish worth Tk 38.4m washed away in B'baria

BRAHMANBARIA, Aug 24: A total of 3739 ponds and some water bodies had overflown due to the flooding in eight upazilas of Brahmanbaria district. As a result around 532 tonnes of fish and huge quantities of young fish worth over Tk 38.4 million have been washed away, district Fishery Office sources said.
The livelihood of around 25,000 fishermen in the district have been seriously affected by the flooding, sources said.
The number of the affected ponds are 1060 on 471.30 acres in Sadar, 430 on 135 acres in Nabinagar, 1220 on 477.47 acres in Kasba, 120 on 62 acres of Sarail, 150 on 65 acres in Nasirnagar, 63 on 31 acres in Akhaura, 248 on 40.22 acres in Banchharampur and 448 on 251 acres in Ashuganj upazilas.
Some 116.68 tonnes of fish and 1.6 million young fish worth Tk 10 million have been washed away in Sadar, 21.34 tonnes of fish and 0.8 million young fish worth Tk 2.4 million in Nabinagar, 310.48 tonnes of fish and 10 million young fish worth Tk 16.1 million in Kasba, 25.51 tonnes of fish and 1.5 million young fish in Sarail worth Tk 2.12 million in Sarail, 26.34 tonnes of fish and 5.0 million young fish worth Tk 2.74 million in Nasirnagar, 15.01 tonnes of fish and 1.0 million young fish worth Tk 1.71 million in Akhaura, 6.08 tonnes of fish and 1.0 million young fish worth Tk 1.35 million in Banchharampur and 10.51 tonnes of fish and 3.0 million young fish worth Tk 3.69 in Ashuganj upazilas.
The District Fishery Officer said they will provide the fish cultivators with assistance to cope with the loss they have suffered due to the flooding.
