Fisherman shot dead by pirates in Bay

BHOLA, Sept 19 (UNB): A fisherman was shot to death and 35 others were injured with bullets in an attack by pirates at Kutubdia channel of the Bay of Bengal in Chittagong district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as M Sidu Miah (40), a resident of Bhobanipur union in Daulatkhan Upazila of Bhola district.
Other victims hail from different villages of the Upazila.
Locals said Sidu along with 19 fishermen in a trawler of 'FB Faria' from Daulatkhan went to catch fish in Kalkini in the Kutubdia area on Thursday morning.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon as a gang of pirates from three trawlers suddenly opened fire on them while fishermen of 25-30 trawlers were catching fish in the area, leaving Sidu dead on the spot and 35 other fishermen injured.
A trawler of 'FB Rafin' sank in the sea after it was hit by a trawler carrying bandits but all fishermen managed to swim ashore, said Moslem Uddin, boatman of 'FB Faria'.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Daulatkhan thana Abul Bashar said the injured fishermen were admitted to the Charfashion Upazila Health Complex.
