SUNAMGANJ, Nov 3 (BSS): Days have become brighter for a number of hardcore poor fishermen in the southern parts of Sunamganj district after they became self-reliant cultivating new hybrid fish in the river Surma.
The cultivation of fish variety called 'Monosex' is getting popularity as an NGO dubbed Efforts for Rural Advancement (ERA) extended technical and financial support to the farmers for cultivating the fish variety.
Some 100 poor fishermen have already earned Tk 250,0000 after investing over Tk 100,000 for cultivation of 10,000 fry Monosex during four months starting from July this year.
Cultivation of the new variety is easier than any other fish cultivation as it requires some cages and nets.
Earlier, the ERA imparted necessary training to the fishermen on cultivation of Monosex and weaving of fish catching nets.
Each of the fish weighs one kg and is sold at Tk 100 each. The monosex could be cultivated thrice a year.
Officials of the ERA said that they bore 50 per cent cost of the fishermen and the remaining expenses came from the savings of the fishermen.
The fishermen might not need extra financial support for cultivation, as they would be able to afford the money for buying nets and cases.
