Fishermen passing hard days

RAJSHAHI, Sept 24 (UNB): Hundreds of fishermen in the district are passing hard days due to acute shortage of fishes in the water bodies.
Fishermen said canals, rivers, beels (large water body) and other water bodies are almost fishless because no flood has occurred in the current season. Fishes generally enter the water bodies with floodwater.
The acute shortage of fishes in the water bodies rendered hundreds of poor fishermen jobless, putting them to utter uncertainty.
Fisherman Ismail of Ratanpur village under Durgapur Upazila said there were abundant fishes of different varieties in the water bodies in the past. "But those became almost fishless in recent years," he added.
The fishermen demanded of the government to release fish fry in all large water bodies to help them survive.
