Five DU, RU professors, JCD chief remanded

Prof Anwar Hossain and Prof Harun-or-Rashid of Dhaka University (DU) were produced in the CMM court Saturday and given a four-day police remand against the backdrop of last week's campus turmoil, reports UNB.
President of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, Azizul Bari Helal, was granted five-day remand when he was produced before the court.
In separate cases filed with Shahbagh police station under the emergency rules, police brought charges against the suspects of violating the rules, issuing provocative statements and instigating indiscipline "directly or indirectly".
Prof Anwar Hossain, general secretary of Dhaka University Teachers Association, and Dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Harun-or-Rashid were arrested by plainclothes men from their houses in Fuller Road after Thursday midnight.
Helal was held from Maghbazar area Friday morning, under a hunt following student rioting in and around the DU campus and backlashes at some other universities and colleges.
They had been held incommunicado since their arrest. Police produced them before the court of Magistrate Ahsan Kabir in the afternoon and demanded seven days' remand. But the court granted four-day remand against both the teachers and five-day against the JCD president.
Meanwhile, three detained professors of Rajshahi University (RU), including former Vice-chancellor Saidur Rahman Khan, were produced in the CMM court in Rajshahi Saturday and taken on 10-day police remand.
Elite-force RAB handed over Prof Abdus Sobhan, Prof Moloy Kumar Bhoumik and Saidur Rahman to Motihar thana police at about 5.30pm.
Police produced them before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Syed Rabiul Reza at 6.0 pm and sought to take them on 10 days' remand. The court granted the prayer for the long remand.
They had been held incommunicado since their arrest.
Joint forces arrested Saidur, Sobhan, professor of Applied Physics and Electronics Department and convenor of Pragotishil Shikkhak Samaj, and Moloy, Professor of Management Department, on Friday afternoon.
