Five DU, RU teachers, JCD president arrested

Five senior university teachers including former Rajshahi University (RU) vice-chancellor and Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) general secretary, and Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal (JCD) president were arrested by security personnel Friday morning in the capital and in Rajshahi, report UNB/ bdnews24.com
In the wee hours of Friday, DUTA General Secretary Anwar Hossain and another senior Dhaka University teacher Harun-or-Rashid were picked up by intelligence agency from their respective campus residences.
Family and campus sources said plainclothes security personnel went to Fuller Road residences of Hossain of Biochemistry Department and Rashid of Political Science Department at about 12:20 am.
The security men, however, did not explain to family members of the arrested teachers the reason behind the arrests.
In another development, three professors of Rajshahi University, including former Vice-Chancellor Saidur Rahman Khan, were arrested from their residences in Rajshahi city early Friday.
Plainclothes RAB personnel early Friday detained former vice chancellor of Rajshahi University and adviser to Awami League Saidur Rahman Khan and convenor of RU Progressive Teachers Community Abdus Sobhan.
Khan's son-in-law and teacher of RU Statistics Department Rahmatullah Imon told bdnews24.com some plainclothes men identifying themselves as RAB members took him out at about 2.45 am.
In another drive, joint forces arrested Moloy Kumar Bhoumik, Professor of Management Department, from his sister's house on the campus in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the security personnel arrested Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Azizul Bari Helal from a residence in Dhaka city Friday morning.
JCD sources said Helal was picked up at about 7:00 am.
Police also searched nearby places of the Dhaka University campus in the morning looking for some other leaders of different students' organisations.
