Five Patuakhali men get death penalty

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced on Monday five men from Patuakhali district to death for their involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, report agencies.
The condemned convicts are Ishak Shikdar, Solaiman Mridha, Abdus Sattar Peda, Abdul Goni Hawladar and Awal alias Moulvi Abdul Awal, hailing from different villages in Sadar upazila of the district.
The three-member tribunal headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam handed down the verdict.
The charges of murder and rape against the five war crimes accused were proved by the tribunal.
Earlier on Sunday, the tribunal fixed on Monday for delivering the verdict.
On May 30, the ICT kept the verdict pending after concluding the law point arguments from both sides in the case.
On November 19, the tribunal took into cognisance the charges against them for their alleged involvement in the crimes against humanity in Patuakhali district during the Liberation War in 1971.
On September 6, 2015, police arrested the five war crimes accused from different parts of sadar upazila in Patuakhali district.
