Five sent to jail in RU teacher Shafiul killing case

A Rajshahi court has sent five people to jail in connection with Rajshahi University teacher Prof Shafiul Islam murder case. The five – Ariful Islam Manik, Abdus Salam Pintu, Sirajul Islam Kalu, Sabuj, Mamun and Amal Mahanta, arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel from different places in Dhaka and Rajshahi – were ordered into jail when they were produced before the court on Tuesday. Court sources said, Amal Mahanta, a machete seller picked up by RAB and made accomplice of the case, gave his deposition before a magistrate today. The five detainees also gave their deposition in the afternoon before they were sent to jail. RAB arrested six people, including Amal Mahanta, on November 23 in connection with the killing of sociology department teacher AKM Shafiul Islam. RU Registrar Eltajul Haq filed a case with Motihar Police Station after Shafiul was hacked to death near RU campus on Nov 15, according to a news agency.
