UNB news agency made a flying start in the Meril Media Cup Football Tournament beating formidable Channel i by 2-0 goals in one of the eight opening day matches at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Friday, reports UNB.
Imran Hasan Majumder scored the tournament's first goal in the very third minute of the match while Tanveer Ahmed Khan Raju doubled the margin in the 11th minute for UNB.
In the day's other matches, Sangbad crushed Inquilab 3-0, CSB News beat Ittefaq 1-0, ETV beat Manabzamin 1-0, Ajker Kagoj beat Sangram 1-0.
Anisuzzaman Kallol struck twice and Rezaul Islam Reza netted the other goal for Sangbad while Mahbub Alam Khan scored for CSB News, Abul Kalam Azad for ETV and Shamsuzzaman Khan for Ajker Kagoj.
In the day's remaining three matches, Bangla Vision split points with Jai Jai Din and BTV shared points with Financial Express, both in goal-less affairs, while Samakal made a draw with New Nation. Omar Faruk scored for Samakal and Sharif Khan for New Nation.
Earlier, National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary Aminul Islam Khan inaugurated the week-long meet for the journalists of print and electronic media.
Bangladesh Olympic Association CEO M Wali Ullah and Head of Marketing of Tournament Sponsors Square Toiletries Malik Mohammad Saeed were present as special guests.
Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA) President M Manjurul Haque, General Secretary Syed M Mamun, Tournament Committee Chairman Kamalur Rahman and Secretary Raihan Al Mughni were also present.
Former National player-cum-Dhaka Mohammedan coach Shafiqul Islam Manik and national custodian Aminul Haque acted as match adjudicators.
Today's matches: New Nation vs Naya Diganta (8:30am), Sangram vs Independent (8:30am), Inqilab vs Banglabazar (9:30pm), Manavzamin vs Karotoa (9:30am), UNB vs Jugantor (10:30am), Ittefaq vs Daily Star (10:30am), Jai Jai Din vs Bhorer Kagoj (11:30am) and Financial Express vs New Age (11:30am).
Twenty-four teams, split into eight groups, are taking part in the meet, organised by BSJA.
