Five to die for killing Pearu

A Dhaka court Monday sentenced five people to death for their roles in the killing of former Dhanmondi Club president Khairul Anwar Pearu, reports bdnews24.com.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Azizul Haque handed down the verdict that also fined the convicts Tk 500 each.
The death convicts are - Md Saiful Islam alias Hannan, Fazlur Rahman alias "Bullet Babul", Jatiya Party leader and ward commissioner Amjad Hossain Miah popularly known as Miah Bhai, Emran Hossain and Noor-e-Alam.
Saiful Islam and Fazlur Rahman were in the dock when the judge delivered the verdict. Amjad Hossain and his younger brother Emran Hossain got bail from the High Court, and have been on the run since. Noor-e-Alam is also a fugitive.
The case details said, Pearu, also former vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation, was shot dead in Dhanmondi Club on the night of February 29, 2004.
Under orders of Amjad, the four others killed Pearu for stopping them from drinking liquor and doing other anti-social activities in the club, it was alleged in the case. The election of the club was another reason that prompted the murder, the case said.
Pearu's younger brother Anwaruzzaman filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station on February 30, 2004.
After the verdict, the judge asked Hannan and Babul whether they would appeal the verdict, and they said they would.
Special public prosecutors Borhan Uddin and Khorshed Alam and assistant public prosecutor Abdul Hannan stood for the plaintiff. ABM Sharfuddin Ahmed Khan Mukul pleaded for the defendants.
Pearu's wife Roksana Anwar and their children were in the courtroom. Roksana demanded an immediate execution of the verdict.
