Heavy rain during the last few days coupled with onrush of hill waters from across the border has triggered flash flood in 7 unions and one pourasabha (municipality) of Kalmakanda and Durgapur Upazilas of Netrakone district. Official sources said thousands of people remain stranded in the two Upazilas. Many thatched houses were damaged and newly transplanted T-aman and vegetables on several thousand acres of land went under water. District water development board office sources said the Sumeswari River was flowing 2 meters above the danger level at Durgapur point during the period. Deputy Commissioner of Netrakona Dr Torun Kanti Shikder, who visited the flood-hit areas of Durgapur, said emergency relief operation is being carried out in the flood-hit region under the supervision of district and Upazila administrations, according to a news agency.
