Flood damages crops worth Tk 1.38b in Jamalpur, Tk 760m in Gaibandha

The recent flood has so far damaged huge crops worth over Taka 1.38 billion (138.50 crore) in Jamalpur district and Tk 760 million (76 crore) in Gaibandha district, reports BSS.
In Jamalpur, crops of Tk 1.38 billion (138.50 crore) were damaged due to a flood that prolonged in the district.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the flood hit the district on July 03 and lasted till July 15 this year.
During the period, the flood water submerged 11,524 hectares of land of various crops out of standing crops on 40,546 hectares of land in all the seven upazilas here. The crops are-- T-Aman seed bed, Aush paddy, jute, vegetable, sesame, green chili, maize and banana.
Flood water completely damaged crops on 6,990 hectares of land and 4,517 hectares of land partially. As a result, farmers lost 32,739 tonnes of crops by the recent flood.
The DAE office said a total of 63,417 farmers incurred the huge loss caused by the flood.
Vegetables worth over Taka 428.8 million (42.88 crore) were damaged by the flood while Aush rice worth Taka 212.2 million (21 crore 22 lakh 48 thousand), jute Taka 634.3 million (63 crore 43 lakh 70 thousand), maize Taka 16 million (1.60 crore), green chili Taka 67.2 million (6.72 crore), T-Aman seed bed 17 million (Taka one crore seven lakh 20 thousand), banana Taka 7.68 million (76.80 lakh) and sesame Taka 8 million (80 lakh) were damaged by the flood.
Deputy Director of the DAE Zakia Sultana said farmers have started planting T-Aman seed in full swing after receding the flood water.
Earlier, farmers prepared huge seed beds so that they could recoup the loss caused by the flood, she said, adding: "We are closely monitoring the situation to help them (farmers)."
In Gaibandha, standing crops with summer vegetables of Tk 760 million (76 crore) were damaged due to a flood that prolonged in the district.
The crops with summer vegetables farmed on 6436 hectares of land had been affected due to the flood that occurred at the first week of this month. Of them, vegetables and crops produced on 3973 hectares of land had been damaged fully.
This was disclosed by the deputy director (DD) of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) here Md Khorshed Alam Sarker to this correspondent over mobile phone this morning as the main focal person of the department.
The deputy director (DD) also said the farmers of different shoals located on the eastern side of the Brahmaputra River and river basins on the western side of the river under Sundarganj, Sadar, Sundarganj and Fulchhari upazilas of the district farmed the vegetable and crops during the Kharip-2 season with an expectation to earn economic profit against the varieties but their hopes and aspiration were nipped as the crops and vegetable were damaged for remaining it under flood water for few days at a stretch.
The crops and vegetables included jute, maize, Ropa Aus, groundnut, Aman seed bed, banana, chili, and lady's finger, he continued to say.
The price of the damaged crops has been estimated at Tk 760 million (76 crore), he added.
