Fishery sector counts loss of Tk 200m

SYLHET, June 09. Flooding has hit hard the road network in the district and adjoining areas, causing immense sufferings for general people.
Although the floodwater has started to recede from most places of the upazilas in the district, the overall flood situation is yet to be normal.
As many parts of local roads have been damaged, people have to suffer much to move from one place to another.
When contacted, Sylhet LGED Executive Engineer Md Faruque Hossain told this correspondent that some 160 kilometre of roads in rural areas were inundated by the flash flood.
"We would have to assess the final damage after the situation improves further with the full recession of floodwater."
He also claimed that some emergency repair work was carried out immediately.
Talking to the FE, Roads and Highways Executive Engineer Md Amir Hossain informed that 39.20 kilometre of roads was damaged partly or fully by flooding in Sylhet district and neighbouring areas.
The damage has been preliminarily estimated at Tk 855 million (85.50 crore), he said, adding that the final damage would be assessed after the flood water will recede totally.
The badly damaged roads are Salutikor- Gowainghat road, Darbast-Kanaighat road. Sylhet-Charkhai-Zakiganj road, Companiganj-Chhatak road, Mirganj- Manikkona road and Sylhet city part of Sylhet-Dhaka highway.
Meanwhile, the flood situation has improved in the district during the last 24 hours although some new areas in Biswanath, Golapganj and Beanibazar upazila were inundated today.
The Surma River was flowing 51cm at its Kanaighat point and the Kushiyara flowing 13cm above the red mark at 18cm at its Bangladesh entry point at Amolshid of Zakiganj border on Sunday afternoon.
An official at the district control room at the DC office said 4,505 people were now staying at flood shelters of Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Golapganj, Beanibazar and Jaintapur upazilas.
Meanwhile, the fishery sector suffered badly in the floods that hit the Sylhet region this time. The loss is estimated to be worth about Tk 200 million (20 crore).
An official at the district fishery office, Sylhet said according to a report prepared two days ago that it was found that there has been a huge damage to the fish wealth as fishes from over 8,000 ponds and large ponds (dighi), including the fish farms spread on 1583 hectares, washed away by the floodwater. The extent of damage has been estimated at about Tk 200 million (20 crore), the official said.
The flood-hit upazila is Gowainghat while other affected areas are located in Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Zakiganj and Companiganj upazila.
The loss of fish would be worth about Tk 162.5 million (16.25 crore) while the loss of fries would be worth Tk 26 million (2.6 crore).
The infrastructural damage was estimated to be worth Tk 8400,000.
As many as 2,100 water bodies were flooded and their fishes washed away.
