Wednesday, 29 August 2007

The death toll from flood-related incidents like drowning, waterborne diseases and snakebites rose to 728 with 19 fresh deaths reported in the last 24-hours until Tuesday morning, reports UNB.
Meanwhile, the flood situation improved remarkably in the affected districts, as all the rivers, barring three, are flowing below their danger marks, and floodwater continued to recede.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in its Tuesday bulletin said, the Padma was flowing 8-cm above its danger level at Goalondo and 8-cm above at Bhagyakul points in the morning.
It also said, the Surma was flowing 68-cm above its red mark at Kanaighat point, while the Kushiyara 100-cm above the danger level at Amalshid and 19-cm above at Sheola points.
Meanwhile, a PID handout said, over 16 million people of around 2.286 million families in 256 upazilas of 39 districts have been hit by the flood since on July 30. Of the affected people, over 23,357 took refuge in 90 shelters.
