Flood situation in Ganges basin starts improving

RAJSHAHI, Oct 4 (BSS): The overall flood situation in the Ganges basin started improving since Sunday morning as water levels in many of its rivers and tributaries recorded a falling trend in last 24-hour after remaining stable in the previous couple of days.
Of the 30 river points, monitored in the Ganges basin, water levels receded at 23 points and rose at seven points, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
However, the rivers were still flowing below the danger levels at 27 points, while above the danger levels at three other points on Sunday like the previous day.
Local office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) recorded a falling trend at all the eight points except one of the Ganges and the Padma Rivers Sunday, Mukhlesur Rahman, Superintending Engineer of BWDB, told the news agency.
Water level in the Ganges River further receded by 20 centimeters (cm), 13 cm, seven cm and eight cm at Pankha in Chapainawabganj, at Rajshahi and at Hardinge Bridge and at Talbaria points respectively.
Water level in the Korotoa River rose by four-five cm at Bogura point, and receded by nine cm at Chak Rahimpur point. The Korotoa River was still flowing 104 cm above the danger level at Chak Rahimpur point.
FFWC Executive Engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said a falling trend had been recorded at all the six points of the Jamuna River for the last couple of days.
