Flood situation in N region worsens

Flood situation in the northern regions of the country has worsened as fresh areas in Kurigram, Sirajganuj and Gaibandha districts were inundated leaving nearly 0.26 million people marooned, reports BSS.
Local sources said nearly 0.26 million people in three northern districts-Kurigram, Sirajganj and Gainbandha-were marooned as flood water engulfed low-lying areas of the districts.
Water levels in 44 river stations monitored by Flood Forecasting and
Warning Centre (FFWC) have marked rises and 31 stations recorded falls.
Among the 83 monitored water level stations, water levels at 12 monitored river stations are flowing above their respective danger marks, a bulletin issued by FFWC said Thursday.
The Teesta at Dalia, the Ghagot at Gaibandha, the Brahmaputra at Chilmari, the Jamuna at Bahadurabad, Sariakandi and Sirajganj are flowing above their danger marks 30 cm, 25 cm, 11 cm, 36 cm, 68 cm and 15 cm. While the Atrai at Baghabari, the Dhaleswari at Elasin, the Lakhya at Lakhpur, Padma at Goalundo, the Surma at Sunamganj and the Kangsha at Jariajanjail are flowing above their respective danger levels by 71 cm, 47 cm, 25 cm, 4 cm, 23 cm and 30 cm.
In Sirajganj, new areas were inundated as water level of the Jamuna river at Sirajganj point is flowing above danger level. Over 0.1 million people in the district were marooned and many areas along the Jamuna river were eroded.
In Kurigram, nearly 0.125 million people of over 400 villages in district were marooned in the flood water. The standing crops on the vast tracts of land also went under flood water.
In Rangpur, flood situation deteriorated as the major rivers are
flowing above danger marks (DM) at seven points in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts marooning over 0.15 million people.
The situation worsened in 24 hours ending at 6 am Thursday due to continuous onrush of waters from the upstream during the period, sources in Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB) said. Local sources and union chairmen reported incidents of sporadic erosion at places in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
In Gaibandha, overall flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin under four upazilas of the district worsened as the water level of the river rose in the 24 hours until morning.
With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the chars and river basin areas of Kapasia union under Sundarganj upazila, Kamarjani and Mollarchar unions under Sadar upazila, Fazlupur, Erendabari, Gozaria and Urya unions under Fulchhari upazila and Holdia and Saghata unions under Saghata upazila had been inundated leaving over 9,000 families marooned.
As a result, the standing crops particularly Aman seed bed, Aus variety, T-Aman paddy and seedbed of late variety Ganzia paddy including summer vegetables went under flood water making the farmers worried and frustrated about their food security.
Many flood victims have taken shelter on the nearby flood control
embankment and were passing their days miserably with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds for want of foods and pure drinking water, local sources said.
