Flood situation to worsen in country's central parts

Sunday, 5 August 2007

At least 81 people have been killed so far in the current flooding across the country and the flood situation is likely to deteriorate further in the country's central parts as the major rivers continued to rise, reports UNB.
About seven million people of 1.5 million families have been affected by the flood that hit 215 upazilas of 38 districts, causing colossal damage to life and property and standing crops, said a source at the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry.
Flood situation in Manikganj, Munshiganj, Rajbari, Madaripur and Shariatpur districts, and Dohar and Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka district will deteriorate further in the 48 hours from Saturday morning as the Ganges-Padma still continued swelling at Taraghat point of Kaliganga river.
The rise of Ganges-Padma may also cause increase of water level in its tributaries, including Tongi khal and Turag and Sitalakhya rivers, aggravating the flood situation in Bhairab and eastern part of capital city.
However, the flood situation in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Bogra, Netrakona and Sunamganj will improve in a couple of days as water level receded at Aricha point on Friday night.
But the flood situation in Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Pabna and Tangail districts will remain stable during the period as waters of Dharla and Teesta started to recede slowly.
