Flood situation worsens in dists

JAMALPUR, Aug 31 (BSS): Flood situation in the district remained unchanged through the water level in the river Jamuna receded during the last 24 hours.
Bangladesh Water Development Board sources said, during the period river Jamuna dropped 6 inches of water and was flowing 30cm above the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point this noon.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said, over 71,000 people in nine unions in Islampur uazila, seven unions in Dewanganj upazila, three unions in Madarganj upazila and six unions in Sarishabari upazila were affected by the flood.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Dewanganj upazila, Md. Saiful Islam said they have distributed relief materials among the 200 families in the upazila.
Chairman of Madarganj Uapazila Parishad Obidur Rahman Belal said six hundred families in Char Pakerdaha, Balizury and Zorkhali unions were badly affected by the flood water.
He said no relief materials allotted for the marooned people in the upazaila. Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Islampur upazila Masumur Rahaman said they have distributed relief materials among the 1,100 families in the upazaila.
He said the situation is normal, there is no necessary to open the flood shelter in the upazila.
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Nabakumar Chowdhury said, water level in the rive Brahmaputra has started receding and the flood situation is expected to be improved soon.
He said, erosion of the river was severe at Belgachha union in Islampur upazila. They have already sent a proposal to the higher authority to take necessary measure to stop the river erosion, he added.
Kurigram
An UNB report from Kurigram says: The overall flood situation in six upazilas of the district has worsened due to incessant rainfalls and onrush of water from upstream.
The deluge-hit six upazilas are Nageshwari, Sadar, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Rajibpur.
Flooding has rendered at least one lakh people marooned in the low-lying areas of 25 unions of the upazilas.
Besides, transplanted Aman seedlings and vegetables on 12 thousand acres of land have gone under flood water. The authorities have shut 50 schools in the district for unavoidable circumstances.
Abu Taher, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB), said the water level of the Brahmaputra at Chilmari point rose by 13 centimetres in the last 24 hours and the river was flowing four centimetres above the danger mark at the point.
The Dharla was flowing close to the danger level at the ferry ghat point while water level of the Teesta at Kawnia point was below the danger mark.
The deputy commissioner has provided 100 tonnes of rice and Tk 0.1 million for the flood-affected people.
A letter has been faxed to the ministry concerned seeking allocation of 200 tonnes of rice and Tk 0.5 million cash for the flood victims.
