Floods damage 462 kms of road

As many as 462 km of road have been damaged by floods induced by upstream runoff and heavy rain in 12 districts including- Feni, Cumilla, Habiganj and Moulvibazar, reports bdnews24.com.
A report by the Roads and Highways Department revealed the damage to the road network of the Cumilla, Sylhet and Chattogram zones due the flooding that started on August 20.
Zikrul Islam, the superintending engineer of the department's Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Circle, told the news agency on Saturday: "What we have so far is just preliminary information. The full extent of the damage can be determined once the water recedes. This is a very early report as many areas are still inaccessible due to flooding."
"We will send people to check the condition of the roads once the situation improves. We are compiling information sent from different districts and sending it to the ministry. Once the flood water recedes, we will start repairing the damaged roads."
The information about the damaged roads, bridges and culverts from various road divisions of the Roads and Highways Department has been collected through the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre set up at the Sarak Bhaban in Dhaka. The report has been sent to the Road Transport and Highways Division.
A total of 111 roads under the Road Division's Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur and Cox's Bazar districts in three zones have been damaged. The length of the damaged roads is 462.21 kilometres, the report read.
